This exhibition at the V&A is a celebration of the creativity and ingenuity of African fashion, featuring over 250 objects, including over 70 new acquisitions. The exhibition, which includes clothing, textiles, film footage and family photography, is spread over two floors and is divided into sections including the Politics and Poetics of Cloth, Minimalism, Afrotopia, and Adornment. There is an African Cultural Renaissance section which links the increasing independence of African nations beginning in the 1950s to an outpouring of creativity in the continent’s fashion. On the mezzanine level, dressed mannequins showcase the work of a new generation of African designers.
