In 1970, American actor and director Sam Wanamaker followed his mission to build a replica of William Shakespeare’s original 1599 performance space to educate, entertain, and celebrate the impact of the playwright’s work on the world. The building on Bankside, opened in 1997–after Wanamaker’s death–is the third Globe, the first lost to accidental fire and the second closed by parliamentary decree in 1642. Shakespeare’s Globe is home to both the Globe Theatre and 2014’s addition, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
Visitors can join workshops, lectures and guided tours and watch plays. The Globe Theatre is an open air 360° auditorium with performances in all weathers. Guests are advised to dress appropriately. It’s the only thatched building in London – with special permission; a no-thatch law has existed in the city since the Great Fire of 1666. The Playhouse is indoors and atmospherically lit by 100 beeswax candles as from Shakespeare’s London. An attic winch allows for impressive flying acts and there’s a painted ceiling and a schedule of plays, concerts and other events. An Access Scheme is committed to helping all guests make the most of their visit as detailed on the official website. A shop sells Shakespeare-inspired gifts and the Swan Bar and Restaurant serves afternoon teas, Sunday roasts and other meals with seasonal British produce.
Watch plays in the Globe Theatre from the Yard (standing) for £5. Ticket prices increase as seat levels move closer to the Upper Gallery. Cushions are available to hire. Playhouse tickets start at £5 in the Upper Gallery and increase in price closer to the stage.
